Moving Essentials
Your complete checklist for a smooth move.
Before You Move
- Notify your current landlord or mortgage servicer of your move date.
- Forward your mail through USPS at least two weeks before moving.
- Update your address with your bank, employer, insurance providers, and the DMV.
- Transfer or cancel local memberships (gym, library, etc.).
- Arrange for utilities to be disconnected at your old home and connected at your new one.
- Obtain copies of medical, dental, and school records.
- Confirm your moving company booking and insurance coverage.
Packing Tips
- Start packing non-essential items several weeks before your move date.
- Label every box with its contents and the room it belongs in.
- Use color-coded labels or tape for each room to speed up unloading.
- Pack heavy items in small boxes; light items in large boxes.
- Keep an "essentials" box with items you'll need the first night (toiletries, chargers, snacks, bedding).
- Take photos of electronics setups before disassembling them.
- Wrap fragile items in clothing or towels to save on packing materials.
Moving Day
- Do a final walkthrough of your old home — check every room, closet, cabinet, and the garage.
- Take meter readings for gas, electric, and water at both properties.
- Keep important documents (mortgage papers, IDs, insurance) with you — not in the moving truck.
- Have cash on hand to tip movers if you are satisfied with their service.
- Confirm the delivery window with your moving company the day before.
After You Move
- Change the locks on your new home as soon as possible.
- Locate your main water shut-off valve, electrical panel, and gas shut-off.
- Test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms; replace batteries if needed.
- Register your children in their new school district.
- Update your voter registration.
- Introduce yourself to your new neighbors.
- Review your homeowners insurance policy to ensure adequate coverage.
